With University degrees in Psychology and Drama, shihan Alex has been teaching and running dojos for 25 years. Having had the great priviledge of training under reknowned instructors shihan Katushito Gorai, shihan Kenny Uytenbogaardt and shihan Trevor Tockar, she has dedicated her karate career to training with and learning from the best Kyokushin teachers and champions worldwide and is committed to bringing this knowledge and experience to her students.
Her classes are disciplined with a great balance between challenging tasks and lighthearted fun.
Teaching Kyokushin’s traditional syllabus, her youth programs are aimed at empowering students, building confidence and practicing emotional regulation and resilience. The teens program is specifically geared towards the changing teenage body and mind; focus is on discipline, self control, mental clarity, goal-oriented tasks, etiquette and mental and physical mastery.
Shihan Alex’s mentoring program for students is designed to train students to instruct (Teach-to-Teach). Students learn to understand that different bodies and minds may require alternate teaching and explanation methods. The aim of this program is to empower students, develop a strong sense of community in the dojo, and create a culture of humility, service to one another, mutual support and a spirit of generosity.
Shihan Alex has competed in 40+ tournaments and holds National Championship titles in South Africa (9), Australia (7), New Zealand (2) and North America (1) in both kumite (fighting) and kata (form).
